Utilizing the digital applications ‘procreate’ and ‘Illustrator’ was a turning point in my journey as an artist. It opens up so many doors in terms of brush strokes, pattern, and presetation.

The process of creating this piece was very structured. In this work, I pushed myself my organizing with layers in the toolbar on the top right, which helped me with refining lines and patterns throughout my journey.
Work #2
This piece is the only one where I have really used the color of the background to bring the foreground to life. Without this exact tone of burnt orange, the portrait would appear highly fragmented and unfinished. This technique also brought a cohesiveness and universality to the viewer.

In this piece, I noticed that throughout the creation process, I kept checking myself in my artistic decisions. I asked the questions, “Am I presenting the work in a way that assists meaning?” and “Am I being too perfectionist about details?”. I discovered that simplicity was most effective for this work. Maintaining such a graphic look and large spaces of block color is not something that is or was comfortable, and it is a method I am looking forward to exploring in future works.
Below, I explore color theory. I am stricken by the stark difference in the emotion of an artwork by the mere placement of the background on the color wheel. I analyzed the contrast and effect that background color has on the various skin tones in this piece.
